Intro to West Coast Swing 1:3
Learn the smooth, versatile partner dance you can take to virtually any genre of music. UCWDC Champion Walt Overgaard and Debbie Susong will guide you from your first steps all the way to a simple routine, no partner required.
West Coast Swing (WCS) is one of the most versatile and social partner dances in the world — and it's coming to Wildwood. Rooted in the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug traditions, WCS is known for its smooth, elastic look and feel, created through a unique push-and-pull connection between partners. Unlike many dances, it's danced in a stationary slot pattern, making it practical on any size dance floor and adaptable to an enormous range of music styles, from country and blues to pop and hip-hop.
What makes West Coast Swing special is what happens between partners. The dance encourages improvisation and individual expression, so no two partnerships ever look quite the same. It's social, creative, and surprisingly approachable — even if you've never danced before. Over three weeks, instructors Debbie Susong and UCWDC Champion Walt Overgaard will walk you through everything you need to get comfortable on the floor:
-
Weeks 1–2: Foundational steps, rhythms, and partner connection techniques
-
Week 3: Pulling it all together into a simple routine you can actually use
The focus throughout is on timing, technique, and confidence — not perfection. You'll leave with real skills and a dance you can take anywhere.
No partner required, though bringing one is always encouraged. This series is open to complete beginners and anyone looking to brush up on the basics.
